“One time I asked my grandmother if she knew any magic. Grow up to be yourself, she said. The rest is just party tricks.”
~The Story People
Happy Mother’s Day to all you mothers out there. You know who you are. It has been a jam-packed week. I spent more time doing and less time writing about it so forgive me for making this week’s letter so brief.
I did manage to get most of what needed to be done accomplished. I washed all my seat cushion covers. That’s a major chore as several look the same but are cut slightly differently from each other. If I wash the similar ones together, it is nearly impossible to figure out which cover goes on which cushion. The covers are tight and quite difficult to put on, even when I know which one goes where. They are washed now and dust free for the summer (or until I hit a dusty camp site, whichever comes first). I defrosted my freezer and took everything out of the fridge and did a deep cleaning. I washed my throw rugs (again). The last time I washed them we had rain the following day and, well…
I did a couple loads of laundry and found a mobile RV repairman to come and fix the hose for emptying my grey tank and to replace the anode in my hot water heater. I got propane and had my oil changed. I had an intake appointment with a new doctor. I just felt like I needed to be acquainted with a doctor in the area just in case I should ever require medical services. I made lasagna for us for dinner one night and enchiladas another night and we went out several times (Thai and sushi). We played scrabble most nights and Barbara and I often had breakfast together before moving to her office and solving all the problems of the world. (If they don’t seem resolved to you, be patient. We’re old and slow and not finished yet.) All in all, it was a very fun and productive week.
By Thursday, I was hearing the call of the wild, and Friday morning I packed up and moved down the road (not very far) to Watson Lake. On the way I picked up a pizza from Domino’s. I had not had one since September, and I was craving pizza. I arrived at Watson Lake and set up in the same campsite I had last year. It seems to be one of the few that is relatively level, so I was glad it was vacant. The next morning Cosmo and I walked down to the lake. What a magnificent view.
Lessons From The Road: I’m feeling pretty smug this week, being comfortable wherever I go. I used to not make the adjustment to being in “The empire” very easily. Now I feel like I can move from “the wild” to “the empire” without batting an eye. I am not sure I could ever move to the empire full-time, but I certainly can visit for a week without any lasting trauma. It helped that Lark drove me most of the places I needed to go. Not having to drive in city traffic is a big bonus for me and being chauffeured to doctor appointments and to do some shopping was a true luxury. Thanks Lark.
I also proved to myself that I can do weather that is not eternally summer. We had a few days when the high temperature was only in the low 50’s and it rained a couple of days. It reminded me of Delaware. I actually broke down and put on long pants twice. 😊 I’ll try to remember that feeling when it gets up into the triple digits this summer.
